Why High-Stakes Decisions Matter More Than New Year’s Resolutions
Every January, we make promises to ourselves.
Eat better. Work out more. Be more present. Grow the business. Fix the thing that feels off.
There’s nothing wrong with that.
But most resolutions are just wishes paired with short-term motivation. They feel good in January and quietly fade by the end of Q1.
What actually changes the trajectory of a year, a business, or a relationship isn’t a resolution.
It’s a high-stakes decision followed by immediate action.
Resolutions Hope. Decisions Commit.
A resolution says, “I want things to be different.”
A decision says, “This can’t stay the same.”
And that distinction is everything.
Real progress doesn’t come from trying harder inside the same patterns. It comes from being willing to face what’s no longer working and choosing change even when it’s uncomfortable.
Every year, my husband and I intentionally disconnect.
Not for a vacation, but for realignment.
We step away from the noise to revisit vision, benchmarks, and expectations, not just in business, but in our marriage and our partnership. We look at what’s working, what feels heavy, and what’s quietly draining energy.
Between us, we run four businesses and a real estate portfolio. We have a core team of twelve, and my husband technically manages over 400 people. There are a lot of moving parts on any given day.
If we want progress in business and emotional fulfilment in the journey, we have to be aware of two things at all times.
Data trends and emotional state.
We look at performance honestly. We talk about how each venture actually feels and why.
And then we ask the most important question.
Who is the solution?
Because negative emotion is rarely fixed by more effort. It’s usually solved by a change in structure, support, leadership, or ownership. Sometimes that means letting go. Sometimes it means handing something down. Sometimes it means bringing in new people, mentorship, or perspective.
Those decisions aren’t easy.
But they are the ones that move everything forward.
The Decisions Leaders Avoid
High-stakes decisions often show up long before we act on them.
Realizing some team members can’t go to the next level.
Admitting your home life isn’t aligned with the success you’re building.
Recognizing your career or business is busy but stagnant.
Knowing you’re holding onto something that needs to be released to create capacity to elevate.
These moments don’t show up as resolutions.
They show up as thresholds.
Why January Matters
Most New Year’s resolutions fade by the end of the first quarter.
But when you make a high-stakes decision in January and act on it immediately, there’s no turning back. You’ve crossed a line. You’ve committed. You’ve taken the first step into a new chapter.
That’s how momentum is created.
That’s how progress accelerates.
That’s how success becomes more fulfilling, not just more demanding.
Crossing the Decision Threshold™
Every meaningful shift in life and leadership happens at a decision threshold. The moment where data, emotion, and vision converge and you choose to move forward anyway.
Not with a wish.
Not with a resolution.
But with a decision tied to a big outcome and supported by the right people, structures, and emotional capacity to sustain it.
As this new year begins, don’t just ask what you want to improve.
Ask yourself, what decision can I no longer afford to avoid?
Because that decision might be the one that changes everything.
