I went down for two weeks. The business didn't miss a beat

I've been quiet online for a few weeks.

Not by choice.

I had a health scare. A side effect from a medication that hit harder than anyone expected and took me completely offline for longer than I'm used to. For someone who moves as fast as I do, being forced to stop was humbling in a way I didn't see coming.

But something happened while I was down that I want to share.

The business didn't stop.

Emails were answered. Client meetings were scheduled. Presentations for upcoming speaking engagements were built. The marketing and sales engine kept moving. Every person on my team, from sales to client delivery to marketing to our interns, knew exactly what to do and did it without me having to say a word.

As I reflect on the last few weeks, this month is tracking to be one of the highest grossing months on record.

While I was barely operational.

I don't say that to brag. I say it because it's the most powerful proof I've ever had of something I talk about with founders and leadership teams every single day.

The strength of your business is never more visible than in the moments you can't show up for it.

So let me ask you something.

If you went down for two weeks tomorrow, what would happen to your business?

Would your team know what to do? Would the right people be in the right seats making the right calls? Or would everything quietly grind to a halt while they waited for you to resurface?

Most leaders don't ask themselves this question until they're forced to. I was forced to. And I'm grateful the answer looked the way it did.

What This Actually Takes

A team that operates without you doesn't happen by accident.

It happens because of the work that goes in before the moment you need it most. The vision that's clear enough that people can navigate without you in the room. The roles are defined well enough that nobody has to guess who owns what. The culture of accountability that makes people rise to the moment instead of waiting to be told what to do.

I've spent years building that inside my own business while helping founders and leadership teams build it inside theirs.

And I'll be honest, there were seasons earlier in my career where I didn't have it. Where everything ran through me. Where if I had gone down for two weeks the way I did recently, the outcome would have looked very different.

That's not a place I ever want to be again. And it's not a place I want for the leaders I work with.

The Question Worth Asking Before Q4

Q4 is days away.

And this is the moment most leaders either get honest about where they are or push it to January.

If you don't feel confident that your team could operate at a high level without you for two weeks, that's worth paying attention to right now. Not after the holidays. Not when things slow down. Now.

Because the leaders who finish Q4 strong aren't the ones who grind harder in October. They're the ones who have the right people in the right seats with the right direction before October starts.

What would it take to build that before the end of the year?

That's exactly the conversation a Q4 executive strategic planning session is designed to have. Who needs to be in what seat. What clarity needs to exist before the quarter kicks in. What decisions have been sitting on the table long enough.

There is nothing like a forced pause to remind you what actually matters. The right team. The right structure. The right foundation to build on.

Moments like these have a way of putting everything into perspective. What you've built. Who you've built it with. Why you do what you do.

I'm grateful for my team, my clients, and every person who has trusted me with their business and their leadership journey.

I'm back. I'm energized. And I'm more committed than ever to helping founders and leaders build something that doesn't just survive without them. Something that thrives.

Reply to this email with "Q4" and let's talk about what that could look like for you and your team.

P.S. I have keynotes coming up in Tampa and Las Vegas and a corporate leadership workshop in Louisiana that I cannot wait to get into the room for. And if you want to know whether your current leadership structure could hold up without you, my Decision Making Diagnostic is a great place to start. It takes five minutes.
